Black Point Lodge is in the heart of Tasmania’s Central Highlands. It exemplifies a harmonious dialogue between architecture and the natural environment.
This lodge style retreat is distinguished by its integration of locally sourced dolerite stone, aged timber decking and claddings as well as the extensive Blackbutt lings which wrap the pitched ceilings throughout the project.
The concept for Black Point Lodge arose from architect Charlie Ellis’s desire to celebrate the Central Highlands’ rugged terrain and native flora. The building’s form extends organically across the gentle sloping site, accentuating the panoramic vistas while maintaining a responsible environmental footprint that blends into its natural environment.
The external areas of the lodge consist of band sawn faced Blackbutt vertical cladding with a wharf grey finish which provides modern articulation and weathered sophistication, while the locally sourced dolerite stone is used to balance the build in different areas and extends up the 4 bold chimneys grounding the lodge in its natural environment. At ground level the lodge is wrapped in a mix of preaged hardwood decking and locally sourced dolerite stone laid as paving. The roof is finished off with a nail strip profile in Matt basalt which blends seamlessly into the structure.
Internally the use of clear finished Blackbutt timber throughout ceilings, walls, and joinery showcases craftsmanship and celebrates Australian hardwood, forming a cohesive narrative between the structure and the exterior finishes. The dolerite stone extends into the house also, surrounding the fireplaces as well as other feature sections. The floors throughout are burnished concrete with hydronic floor heating servicing all spaces. Recycled Blackbutt windows frames were used to house the large floor to ceiling glass which captures and frames the outside vista through all the areas of the lodge.
This project was also featured on Series 12 of Australian Grand Designs.
