The Three Sister project represents the seamless integration of contemporary architectural design with the timeless charm of a historic period townhouse. Located in a heritage-rich neighbourhood, the original residence possessed significant character but lacked the spatial functionality and openness desired for modern living. The design brief called for a bold yet sensitive extension that would respect the building’s heritage while introducing a striking, light-filled modern addition.

The existing town house has a long history starting of life in the early stages 1900’s as two separate town houses.  These had been integrated into one dwelling during a previous renovation around 15 years ago.  Where possible we worked with the existing structure to avoid more wall changes than necessary while in some areas re jigging of wall lines where required.  The interiors carry a consistent colour pallet throughout the entire build with a focus on more period design within the existing town house

The extension is a two-level contemporary structure that contrasts yet compliments the original home. The design employs a dynamic combination of materials with striking brushed copper Structuur paired with sawn faced black cladding and expansive glazing. This creates a clear contrast between old and new, allowing the extension to stand as a distinct architectural statement while maintaining harmony with the surrounding streetscape.

The extension is carefully positioned to preserve the integrity of the original period façade and roofline when viewed from the street. The modern addition is set back, ensuring the historic character remains the primary visual focus from public vantage points.

The result is a cohesive blend of heritage and modernity — a home that honors its past while embracing the future. The extension not only enhances the livability of the residence but also contributes to the architectural diversity of the neighborhood.
